Stills with a Story

By Ewien van Bergeijk - Kwant 13 Mar, 2020
Walking through Tana, the capital of Madagascar, we walked past this 'line of underwear' ... It struck my attention since there was also a Christmas tree (it was December) for sale. You - or at least I - wonder who would buy this kind of underwear in the streets to put under their Christmas Tree?

For this sole reason, I just had to cross a busy street to capture this unusual scene. To the surprise of many local bystanders I must admit  ... Crazy white woman :)

This photo raises many questions, so I might as well explain a bit of its context ... While traveling in West-Africa, we drove by this scene and were both thinking out loud: "What, wait ... did you just see a donkey?" Since we both answered YES to that question, we decided to turn the car and drive by again. Something we rarely do by the way :).

It is a bit weird to admit, but I was literally hanging out of the car window to get a decent shot of this scene we hadn't seen before in 15+ year of living in Africa. Later on, I asked my friends WHY they thought he was transported like this. They hadn't seen anything like this before either. The WHERE TO was easier to answer for them. Possibly to the market to be sold for either meat or skin or both.

In December 2019, I received news that this image is selected by Ripleys USA to be published in their 'Annual 17' - kind of a Guinness Book of Records - with unique (exclusive) photos and stories from around the world.

Oftentimes a photograph contains a background story, worth writing about. Here I will publish short stories behind the photograph taken or why and how I choose to specifically photograph this person or scene.

Like the one above ...This spontaneous photo, on which Anco is lying down, ‘Passed out’ after a warm day of filling containers, caught the attention of the jury of an international photo competition.

From 48000+ entries, ‘Passed Out’ was one of the 15 finalists who were nominated in the category Storytelling. The photo was part of an exhibition in Dana Point, California during a 3-day photo eventand appeared in the January/February issue of Click Magazine.  An encouragement to keep pursuing my passion for documentary photography.
